End of an Era

The End of an Era (or So Long and Thanks for all the Fish)

The past three and a half years have been among the most challenging & rewarding times for me. There were days where as a staff, we would sit around and wonder “why are we doing this?”. I would sit there and think “I can’t go on, I can’t do this anymore.” It was in those moments, that my favorite quote from Lord of the Rings comes to mind (here’s the YouTube version, if you prefer it)

Sam: It’s like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger they were, and sometimes you didn’t want to know the ending, because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened. But in the end, it’s only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come and when the sun shines it’ll shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you, that meant something, even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr Frodo, I do understand… I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back only the didn’t. They kept going, because they were holding onto something…

Frodo: What are we holding onto, Sam?

Sam: That there’s some good in this world, Mr Frodo… And it’s worth fighting for.

But now that struggle has come to the end, and I find myself again wondering if it was worth it. If the time we spent mattered, or if it was all for naught. And again I find myself finding comfort and solace in the words of Samwise Gamgee. Continue reading

Dear Mr. President

Dear Mr. President

Well, this morning before I went into work, I wrote an email to our President Barack Obama. I wanted to be respectful, but also address some concerns I had with his administration and what direction it was headed in. I’m not posting this to open this up for a big political debate, so if you are looking for that, go somewhere else, but I wanted you all to know what I wrote, and maybe if more people write messages, he will begin to realize what it is the people actually want. (I included my email address and phone number in the original that I took out, and I had the URLs in the message, but for cleanliness on here, I hyperlinked them) Continue reading

United We Stand?

United We Stand?

So many times, we christians are our own worst enemy. We judge, argue, call names, ostracize, alienate, and belittle others, over little things in the name of Jesus. But that is so wrong. Continue reading

Lost and Alone

It’s been a bit of an interesting night. I started watching “The Gods Aren’t Angry” by Rob Bell (affiliate link). I was supposed to be writing this blog post, but I was enthralled by the video. When I write, I generally close out all social media, turn off the TV, and put on some music. But tonight, I don’t know why, but I didn’t.

And I thank God I didn’t. Continue reading

Life to the Full

Life to the Full

“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” ~ John 10:10, NIV

How often do we hear this scripture quoted in church? And we focus so much on that first part. “The thief (read Satan, or Devil) comes only to steal kill and destroy”. We stop there. We talk about how we have to fight the devil, resist him so he will flee from us. But life is so much more than just resisting the devil. Continue reading

Facebook Election Drinking Game

Facebook Election Drinking Game

The election is today, and if you are like me, you are not looking forward to Facebook posts when the results of the election come back… So, I figured I’d make it fun (thanks to my friend Lexi for the idea and the first 4 “rules”)…

Without further adieu, the Facebook Election Drinking game Continue reading

A Thought to Ponder

“To all the cynics:
Do you need a reason to have faith, be positive, have hope, and believe? Here it is: the sun will be back again tomorrow. And on that day when the sun falls from the sky? So what? Congratulations, you were finally right on the very last day.”

~ Shawn Duffy

My American History teacher had that on his board one day, and I instantly fell in love with the quote. Why not be optimistic of the future ? Why not have hope? What harm comes out of that? And the day you are wrong, well, that’s the end of the world, so no worries about you being wrong.

Remember, tomorrow is a brand new day, you get to start over again. The question is: What will you do with it? Who will you be?

Prayers

Yesterday was pretty sweet, I got my first tattoo. I got the idea from a song by Misty Edwards when she says “I’ll set you as a seal upon my arm, as a seal upon my heart, for there is love that is as strong as death, jealousy demanding as the grave” So I designed it to be a wax seal, with an angel in the middle, and the lyrics around the outside of the seal. I was thinking of what font/language to do it in, and the nerd in me thought of Elvish, and the graphic designer in me decided it was the best looking font. So, here is what the finished product looks like: Continue reading

Equal Rights

I have recently found myself being drawn into a new cause. There is a great injustice out there that I has surged recently.

Rights for Droids.

Droids in today’s day and age, with all of our civil rights talk, are basically modern-day slaves. I mean, we expect them to do all the crap work, we don’t pay them, and they have no rights.

Heck, we even buy and sell them!

This is a great cause that I am very excited to help support, if you are going to throw your weight behind anything, you should throw it behind this, because Droids are not something to be owned, they are friends to be cherished!

Dangerous Business

“It’s a dangerous business, Frodo, going out your door. You step onto the road, and if you don’t keep your feet, there’s no knowing where you might be swept off to.” ~ J.R.R. Tolkien, The Lord of the Rings

Well, by the time most of you read this, I’ll be on the road. I’m taking a much-needed vacation, and my best friend and I are going to visit Ryan & Janae Dagen!!! I am really excited to see them.

For those of you who don’t know, quick back story on the relationship between Ryan and I. Ryan used to be the youth pastor at Gap Community Church. During that time, I pretty much functioned as his assistant youth pastor, in addition to the other duty’s of my job, since I was employed by GCC at the time. Continue reading
