This is an older post of mine, but a topic I’ve been thinking about for a while and rather than rehash it out again, I figured it would be better to just bring this post back to the forefront of my blog…

Can I just say I love hymns? The style is older, but I love the words, so many of them have some of the best words for worship songs, but we don’t realize it because we get so focused on the fact that it is a hymn, and maybe it says thou and thee, but when you really stop to look at what is really being said, so many times they are so amazing, take “Be Thou My Vision” for instance, read and/or listen to the lyrics and really think about what it says…

“Be Thou my Vision, O Lord of my heart;
Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art.
Thou my best Thought, by day or by night,
Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light.

Be Thou my Wisdom, and Thou my true Word;
I ever with Thee and Thou with me, Lord;
Thou my great Father, I Thy true son;
Thou in me dwelling, and I with Thee one.

Be Thou my battle Shield, Sword for the fight;
Be Thou my Dignity, Thou my Delight;
Thou my soul’s Shelter, Thou my high Tower:
Raise Thou me heavenward, O Power of my power.

(this verse isn’t in the version i have posted here, but I like it)

Riches I heed not, nor man’s empty praise,
Thou mine Inheritance, now and always:
Thou and Thou only, first in my heart,
High King of Heaven, my Treasure Thou art.

High King of Heaven, my victory won,
May I reach Heaven’s joys, O bright Heaven’s Sun!
Heart of my own heart, whatever befall,
Still be my Vision, O Ruler of all.”

wow, I love that song, really look at those lyrics and you will see what I mean, it is a song of pure praise, and song of asking God to really lead your life in every aspect. Below i’ve kinda provided a “translation”:

“Be my vision, oh god who lives in my heart
nothing else is to me what you are
You are my best thought by day and night
awake or asleep, you are my guide

Be my wisdom and my true word
I’m with you, and you are with me
you are my father and i’m your son
you live in me, and i’m one with you

be my shield and my sword for the fight
my dignity and delight comes from you
You are my shelter and high tower
raise me to heaven, source of my power

I don’t need riches or man’s praise
you are all i need, now and forever
you and you only are first in my heart
high king of heaven, you are my treasure

High King of Heaven, you have won my victory
May I have joy from heaven, oh source of heaven’s light
source of my heartbeat, whatever happens
be my vision, or ruler of everything”

 What about you? What are you favorite songs (lyrically, not necessarily musically)

  1. I like the message in the lyrics of many hymns, however I wake up MANY mornings with a song in my head and it is RARELY a hymn. I feel that often, when singing hymns during worship, I don’t have the time to analyze what is really being said, so it doesn’t become as worshipful. I once knew a woman who read hymns as prayers as part of her morning devos. That actually made more sense to me because she could take the time to think about (or translate) them.

  2. Wow this is beautiful! Especially the “translation” part you wrote- it’s good to hear stuff in a different way than I’m used to hearing it.

    Some of my favorite hymns are “In Christ Alone” and “Come Thou Fount.” (Some of my favorite lines: “And as he stands in victory, sin’s curse has lost its grip on me” and “Oh to grace how great a debtor daily I’m constrained to be.”)
