Vice Verses

The theme is “vice verses”. The concept behind that is the idea that rebirth is often birthed in struggle. So these are the verses that have been birthed through struggle, the “vice verses.”

~ Tim Foreman, Bassist from Switchfoot & brother to lead singer Jon Foreman

This is a simple, yet brilliant, idea. One that we often don’t really put together. Every rebirth is birthed out of pain. This can be such a hard concept to understand, and we find ourselves asking these questions

Where is God in the night sky?
Where is God in the city light?
Where is God in the earthquake?
Where is God in the genocide?

Where are you in my broken heart?
Everything seems to fall apart
Everything feels rusted over
Tell me that you’re there

We don’t know where God is, and we cry out, all we want is to know that He is there. How could God be there with something so terrible going on? But think through your life. Never was there a true, honest, rebirth in your life with out pain.

I know this in my own life. It took me hitting rock bottom, curled up on the ground, crying out through a river of tears for me to be reborn. For me, out of the time of turmoil, and chaos, and pain, came so many new things. I made a lot of mistakes, I ruined a lot of good things, but I made new friends, I learned a greater trust in God, I took a giant step forward to the man who I am supposed to be. I can honestly stand and say that I have been reborn and that I am a better man now because of that time.

I know that there’s a meaning to it all
A little resurrection every time I fall
You got your babies, I got my hearses
Every blessing comes with a set of curses
I got my vices, I got my vice verses
These are my vice verses
These are my vice verses

~”Vice Verses” by Switchfoot

I believe that pain is the cause of so much growth. Think about it. If we never felt pain, we would place our hand on a hot stove, and just keep it there until our hand was burnt to a crisp and destroyed for ever. Every time we fall down, get scratched up, we heal, and new skin is formed. As Jon Foreman said in the song “a little resurrection every time I fall […] These are my vice verses.”

My question to you is what are your vice verses? What are the blessings that came with your curses? What are the good, beautiful, awesome things that have come out of times of turmoil & struggle?
