Yes be yes?

“34 But I tell you, do not swear an oath at all: either by heaven, for it is God’s throne; 35 or by the earth, for it is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the Great King. 36 And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make even one hair white or black. 37 All you need to say is simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything beyond this comes from the evil one” ~Matthew 5:34-37

Paraphrased this is saying “don’t make elaborate promises. If you say yes, let it stay a yes. and if you say no, let people be able to trust that it’s a no. There is no need to say anything else.”

I have been thinking a lot about this phrase. What would our world look like if we just kept things plain and simple? Think about it. When people keep going on and on about how much you can count on them to do something, the more I’m worried that they may not live up to what they said. But when they just say “yes.” and leave it at that, I trust that completely.

And while I like a simple Yes or No from others, and not elaborate promises, do I give those in my own life? If I’m being honest with myself, and not idealistic, many times I don’t. I think that’s something I’m going to start working on this year. Being more simplistic in my answers, and holding true to what I say more.

Do you find yourself making elaborate promises? Or trusting simple answers more? Leave a comment…
